The 18th All Japan University Kendo Open Tournament (organized by the All Japan University Kendo Federation, supported by Mainichi Newspapers and others, sponsored by NAX JAPAN, JP Logistics) kicked off on the 14th at Kamei Arena Sendai. In the individual competition's "Second Dan and below" category, there was a final match where Chisaki Yasutake (a first-year student at Kobe Shinwa Women's University, Second Dan) from Hakata Seisho highschool, defeated Hanako Wakao (a first-year student at Rikkyo University, Second Dan) from Takayama Nishi highschool to win the championship. On the final day, the 15th, the winning teams in the "Third Dan and above" team competition for both men and women will be determined.

The tournament is characterized by its "open style with no preliminaries," and has a history of a quarter of a century. This year, more than 1,400 athletes participated from student kendo federations in eight regions nationwide, from Hokkaido to Kyushu. As in the previous year, it was open to overseas universities as well, with entries from 18 athletes from North America, Europe, and Asia.
