The 18th All Japan University Kendo Open Tournament (organized by the All Japan University Kendo Federation, supported by Mainichi Newspapers, NAX JAPAN, and JP Logistics) kicked off on the 14th at Kamei Arena Sendai in Taihaku Ward, Sendai City. In the finals of the individual competition "Nidan and below division," Eisho Takada (3rd year at Fukui University of Technology, Nidan) from Takaoka Kogei highschool won over his schoolmate Tayuu Yoshimizu (3rd year at Fukui University of Technology, Nidan) from Takaoka Kogei highschool to claim the championship. On the final day, the 15th, the champion teams in the "Sandan and above division" for the team competition will be determined for both men and women.

The tournament is characterized by an "open style without preliminaries" and has a history of a quarter of a century. This year, over 1,400 competitors from Kendo federations in eight regions across Japan, from Hokkaido to Kyushu, participated. Following last year, the tournament also opened its doors to foreign universities, with 18 competitors entering from North America, Europe, and Asia.
